Five years after the Brexit referendum and six months after the UK's effective exit from the European Union, the free movement of people, goods and capital will be just a memory of the past from 1 July.

The deadline for EU citizens and their family members to retain their rights of residence in the UK by applying through the EU Settlement Scheme is 30 June. From July, it will be compulsory to show a residence permit in order to be eligible to live, work, study or even rent a home in the UK.

Those residents who do not submit an application will find themselves involved in a myriad of bureaucratic problems that will be difficult to solve.
