This year we revised and edited the MGMF survey and restricted it to just 20 questions. However, we kept the focus on the same key issues, and retained many of the questions to the same format as the previous year so that we could make a reasonable comparison with 2016.

Compiled from the responses of 166 individual senior global mobility professionals worldwide, the report gives a snapshot of the industry – and some useful insights into current practice.

In 2016, there seemed a widely-held expectation that global mobility teams would continue to grow in size and influence, and that the number of assignments would also increase to keep pace with what then appeared to be an unstoppable force of globalisation. This year’s results however, reveal a rather different picture – so while it seems that global mobility has achieved a greater level of recognition as a valuable part of an organisation’s strategy – business in general is operating in more turbulent times and much of what looked like industry trends 12 months ago, have now changed course.

So, the size and headquartering of global mobility teams has changed and there is a shift too in opinions on its resourcing. The finished report throws up a number of such surprises and is a useful measure of how working practices are changing.
