The situation
The Canton of Ticino is currently facing a significant backlog for all immigration-related requests. Current processing times for any new requests in the canton are a minimum of three months, instead of the typical four to six weeks.

  • Types of requests impacted. This affects EU and non-EU nationals seeking new permits, renewals, changes of address and changes of employer, among other procedures.
  • Reasons for delays. The Canton of Ticino is facing internal issues, including restructuring of their staff and adopting and implementing a new online tool, which are affecting immigration-related requests.
  • Looking ahead. Updates from immigration authorities are not expected before three months have elapsed. There is currently no workaround for foreign nationals affected by these delays.
