The rising tide of populism and nationalism is increasingly impacting on international mobility. In the last 12 months, major political decisions, events and conditions have had a significant impact on how businesses approach mobilisation of talent - some examples include Brexit and the recent US travel ban. More than ever, global mobility teams play an increasingly important and strategic role in ensuring the right people can be in the right place at the right time.

In this session, our keynote speakers will outline some of the key trends in Australia, the APAC region and globally which are impacting on the movement of people, how businesses are navigating through the constantly changing political landscape and the ways in which mobility / immigration programs are being adapted in response.

This will be followed by a workshop session where we hear from the audience as to their own experiences and initiatives that have been implemented to better partner with the business in managing political risk.

Cory Davie, Partner – Control Risks Australia Pacific
Cory Davie is a Partner with Control Risks, based in Sydney, where she heads up the client liaison team as well as leading the extractives practice. Cory has been with Control Risks for 6 years, where she has assisted clients respond to and recover from events as varied as the Arab Spring, community unrest in Latin America and a government crackdown on staff in South East Asia. As well, Cory works closely with companies to proactively identify and mitigate the challenges of operating in emerging markets, as well as understanding how larger political dynamics can impact their business and operations. Prior to Control Risks, Cory managed humanitarian operations across the world, working extensively in Liberia, Darfur, South Sudan, Kenya, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Iraq and Haiti, among others.

Nikki Dryden, Senior Associate - US Attorney at Law at Fragomen Worldwide
Nikki joined Fragomen as an Associate in the New York office in 2010 before moving to the firm’s Sydney office as the US Attorney for Fragomen’s Consular Practice team. Nikki provides advice and guidance on all aspects of consular processing in Sydney and across Asia Pacific, including complex issues such as waivers of inadmissibility (based on unlawful presence, misrepresentations, crimes involving moral turpitude), immediate relative filings, surrender of Lawful Permanent Residence, and renouncement of US Citizenship. Nikki also represents multinational corporate clients, large investors, entrepreneurs, small and start-up businesses, and individuals on all types of employment-based temporary visas, including filing Treaty Investor (E-2) company registration applications and E-3 visas for Australian professionals across a variety of industries.
