Meet our speakers: International SOS' Dr Robert (Bob) Jefferson

The talk will take the example of mental health issues in the travelling working population as an example of a significant risk within the framework of duty of care. Mental illness transcends demographics and is a ‘foreseeable risk’. So what is the risk? How does this impact your organisation? What is Duty of Care with regards to mental illness? Business Travel continues to increase, but there is evidence that international business travel can be deleterious to health and business. Mental health is found to have direct and significant impact on organisational success, such as: loss of productivity, absenteeism, presenteeism and increased conflict and relationship strain within and outside of work. Recent work in the area will be discussed.

Dr Robert (Bob) Jefferson

Medical Director, Occupational Health, Europe

 Robert (Bob) Jefferson is a senior and experienced Occupational Physician who is also qualified in Health & Safety with a wealth of organisational experience. After gaining a degree in Genetics at the University of Sheffield, he chose to pursue his studies in Newcastle. Bob graduated with a degree in Medicine at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, where he subsequently completed his postgraduate training in occupational medicine.

 Bob then joined Rolls Royce as a Head of Occupational Health, where he took on the global responsibility for the civil airlines and nuclear segments of the business. Subsequently, he was appointed Director of Occupational Health and Safety for the Isle of Man Government and effectively implemented a consultant lead occupational health and safety service.

 He then returned to the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and was appointed Senior Lecturer in Environmental Medicine and Deputy Director of the Medical Toxicology Centre. Bob then dedicated several years to Environmental Medicine (especially in toxicology and radiation) and Ethics, in which he is recognised as an expert. He notably advised a number of UK based government organisations and NATO on chemical and radiation incidents within the CBRNE (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, or Nuclear warfare (including terrorism) arena. Besides, he also worked with the REAC/TS team in Oak Ridge, and was a member of The Advisory Group on Military Medicine (AGoMM) in UK and a member of the Expert group on the Management of Chemical Casualties Caused by Terrorist Action (EGMCCT) Department of Health amongst others. He also brought his extensive experience in Ethics and spent time as Chair of the UK Faculty of Occupational Medicine’s Ethics Committee and was the Faculty’s representative on the Royal College of Physicians Committee on Ethics in Medicine.

 Bob then did medical consultancy in the fields of Occupational Health & Safety.

 In 2015, Bob became IBM’s Medical Lead for Europe as part of their EMEA Integrated Health Services (HIS) function, advising on occupational health provision and health & safety. Two years later, he joined International SOS in 2017 as Medical Director, Occupational Health for Europe.
