We also collated the questions that attendees posted in the Chat function and Mike has kindly added his answers here:

Q. What do you think Global Mobility will look like in 2021?

Mike:
Mobility in 2021 will hopefully be in a state of recovery. I think there is a backlog of critical assignments which will probably start as soon as the situation allows. However, volumes will probably not recover fully after the initial rush and there will be much more scrutiny of assignments before they are approved.

Q. Would you recommend using a PEO if the organisation doesn’t have an entity?

Mike:
PEOs are certainly one of the options that companies can consider to facilitate the implementation of virtual assignments. However, the suitability of a PEO is dependent on a number of factors and should be reviewed based on the situation.

Q. If GM teams need to cut costs where should they look?

Mike:
To cut costs, first and foremost the company should look at governance. Decide if the assignment is needed at all or if it can be resourced in a different way (for example by using/developing local talent).  Other areas for cost reduction are at the policy level – by evaluating the purpose of each element in the assignment package and reducing allowances and benefits where there is capacity. Finally, streamlining the function, reducing complexity and considering the use of Shared Service Centres or outsourcing can reduce the running costs of mobility.

Q. Can we define virtual assignments please? If it is purely remotely would we consider it an assignment?

Mike:
A virtual assignment is generally defined as when an employee remains in the home country while they are performing tasks and have responsibilites for operations in a different location, for a defined and temporary period of time.

Q.  Do you think that virtual assignments will have a life beyond Covid?

Mike:
Yes, I think virtual assignments will have a life beyond COVID-19. We are seeing a number of companies now formalising virtual assignment policies so that they can add them to the suite of mobility options once COVID is over. However, talk that they would replace other types of mobility are unlikely to materialise. I suspect they will be complementary to existing policy options and will  be just one option in a range of solutions.

Many thanks again to Mike Wincott and AIRINC
